Rensselaer Plateau Working Forest Initiative
What has your RCP or organization done that others will be interested in learning?
We have a multi-landowner, multi-parcel Forest Legacy project that will conserve !2,348 mostly contiguous acres on the Rensselaer Plateau in eastern Rensselaer County New York. This project includes 15 landowners and will conserve a 12 mile corridor that connects several already conserved lands. A FY16 Forest Legacy grant was awarded at $5.5 million that will be match by $2.4 million of state Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) funds to purchase development rights on this land. We are also working on two Community Forest projects that are engaging community members in a big way to be involved in conservation.
What are you interested in working on with other members of the RCP Network?
Region-wide media campaign that raises the awareness of the need for forest stewardship and conservation with owners of woodlands and municipalities across New England and New York. A mentoring program both as mentor and mentee. We have already benefited a great deal from the RCP Network. Several years ago, Sarah Wells, Jay Rasku and Leigh Youngblood served as mentors to us to develop our multi-landowner Forest Legacy project. We followed their advice on almost all aspects of this project from engaging the landowners to writing the grant. This put us way ahead of where we would have been on our own. We hope to learn more and also now share some of our successes. Learning to work with and engage non-traditional partners.
