“The mission of the 12 Rivers Conservation Initiative is to accelerate conservation of the forested landscape from the Kennebec River to the Georges River with the goal of doubling the amount of protected lands. Currently, of the 825,000 acres in the 12 Rivers Initiative area, approximately 45,000 acres are conserved.”

Current Activities:

  • Integrating climate resilience objectives and priorities into the 12 Rivers Regional Conservation Plan
  • Organizing a large multi-parcel land protection project

Previous Projects/Accomplishments:

  • 12 Rivers received two catalyst grants (OSI and LTA) to help incorporate climate change and resilience into long-term planning. Their work has been highlighted by the US Fish and Wildlife Service here (see here) and by the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (see here)
